Forget 2026, The 2028 Election Has Begun!

In this age of forever campaigns, a salvo was lobbed in the 2028 Democratic Primary for President. Likely 2028 Candidate for President, NY Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed State Rep. Ruwa Romman. Oh yes, this is all about 2028.

As a resident of Senate District 7, I’m old enough to remember when my last State Senator, Nabillah Islam (now Nabillah Parkes), wanted to be known as “Georgia’s AOC,” and now a person seeking to be my next State Senator is actually endorsed by AOC. Sigh.

Of note, Romman chose not to run in the special election to replace Parkes, as that would have required her to resign her House seat, prompting yet another special election. I respect that. Parkes, as you will recall, announced her intention to run for Insurance Commissioner, but switched at the last minute to the Lt. Governor race. She resigned her seat with just a few weeks left in the 2026 Legislative Session.

Also of note, Romman, although she is very active on social media, has been outraised quite substantially by fellow Democrat Rahul Garabadu. According to the most recent campaign finance reports, Garabadu has over $100k cash on hand, while Romman has a little less than $15k. Garabadu has spent about $40k thusfar compared to Romman’s $45k.

Garadabu, who does not currently hold an elected position, is running in the special election to replace Parkes, which takes place on May 19, the same day as the primary. How voters handle voting for the same seat twice on the same day will be fascinating to watch.

As for endorsements, remember that California Governor Gavin Newsom endorsed Mayor Lance Bottoms back in February. Now that AOC has started handing out endorsements at the State level, will other potential Democratic hopefuls follow suit?
