AG Chris Carr Announces Run For Governor. Campaign 2026 Is Officially Underway.
Moments ago Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr became the first Republican to announce a campaign to succeed Brian Kemp as Governor when his term ends in 2026.
Carr is portraying himself as the best candidate to continue steady Republican leadership in the mold of the late U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, former Gov. Nathan Deal and Kemp.
“I’ve seen what it takes to be successful,” Carr told The Associated Press in a phone interview. “And I want to run as the proven conservative who will create jobs for hardworking Georgians, keep our families and neighborhoods safe and vigorously defend our Constitution and freedoms.”
The Peach Pundit Rumor Mill has also heard that Lt. Governor Burt Jones, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and former Senator Kelly Loeffler are other potential candidates for Governor. It should be noted, however, that Carr’s wife Joan was Loeffler’s Chief of Staff during her time in the Senate.
Carr is no stranger to high-level politics in Georgia and Washington having served as Chief of Staff to former Senator Johnny Isakson and Commissioner at the Georgia Department of Economic Development. In 2016, Carr was appointed Attorney General by Governor Nathan Deal.
Carr was targeted by MAGA for supposedly failing to “stop the steal” in the 2020 election but crushed a Trump-endorsed primary opponent 78% – 22% in 2022.
