Georgia Dems flip NE GA House Seat

Georgia Democrats have flipped a northeast Georgia State House seat that favored Donald Trump by roughly 12 points in 2020.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Democrat Eric Gisler defeated Republican Mack ‘Dutch’ Guest for a seat in the Georgia General Assembly, with 50.85% of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State’s Office.”

The vacancy in House District 121, which includes portions of Oconee and Clarke counties, was created by the resignation of Republican Rep. Marcus Wiedower in October, when he stepped down to focus on his business. Wiedower had previously defeated Gisler in the 2022 general election by a wide margin, winning approximately 61%–39%.

With this win, Democrats now hold 80 seats in the 180-member Georgia House of Representatives. However, Democrats may soon face a vacancy of their own: State Rep. Sharon Henderson (D-Covington) is currently facing federal felony charges, and a conviction or resignation could trigger another special election in the coming weeks.
