Former Insurance Commissioner Jim Beck Sentenced To Over 7 Years In Prison

The final chapter in the Jim Beck saga was written today:

Ex-Georgia Insurance Commissioner Jim Beck was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison Tuesday for a years-long scheme to steal from a former employer.

Judge Mark Cohen, who ordered Beck to pay $2.6 million in restitution, said Beck had betrayed people close to him for his fraud and then repeatedly lied on the witness stand.

“The testimony was outrageous,” said Cohen.

Beck, the longtime player in Georgia GOP politics, lied to close friends and a cousin to drag them into his scheme to embezzle more than $2 million from Georgia Underwriting Association.

It was reported yesterday the Prosecution would ask Beck be sentenced to 10 years in prison, while the Defense would ask for 5. The Judge split the difference.

Oddly enough, one of the many rental homes Beck owns is right around the corner from my house. I’m guessing it will be on the market soon, as he begins to pay the $2.6M in restitution.
