Some Quick Hits from Over the Weekend
Well, it’s President’s Day. Some of us are off work. Some of us aren’t. Committees in the General Assembly are meeting today. Day 17 of the session begins tomorrow. The rules calendars for the state House and state Senate are here and here.
Here are some quick hits from over the weekend:
- Sens. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA) both voted to convict former President Donald Trump on the charge of inciting violence in the article of impeachment sent to the Senate. Warnock’s statement is available here.
- Although it’s a moot point now, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Q-GA), tweeted at Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) that “[t]he Trump loyal 75 million are watching” when Herrera Beutler confirmed a contentious conversation on January 6 between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and then-President Trump while the Capitol was under siege. There was suspicion that Herrera Beutler could be called as a witness before the trial wrapped up.
- Nearly 665,000 seniors in Georgia have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to Gov. Kemp’s office. More than 75 percent of the doses that Georgia was given have been administered.
- Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold Melton will step down on July 1. Melton has served on the state Supreme Court since 2005 and became chief justice in 2018.
- Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis plans to investigate the call between Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). She is already investigating the January 2 call between Raffensperger and Trump.
- The attorney who may have cost Republicans two Senate seats, Lin Wood, has received notice of a complaint against him from the State Bar. He’s now seeking donations to fight the complaint. Because of course he is.
