Wild Speculation: Herschel Walker Floated as a U.S. Senate Candidate

Newsmax has a story hinting that former University of Georgia, USFL, and NFL star Herschel Walker could run for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2022. I’m not saying that it couldn’t happen or won’t happen, but it’s one of those “I’ll believe it when I see it” situations.

The story quotes Matt Towery, who told Newsmax, “[T]here are two words you’ll soon be hearing a lot — ‘Herschel Walker.'” I recall receiving an email the day after the 2020 presidential election in which Towery chastised the media for not calling Georgia for Trump, but I digress.

Walker has had a taste for politics in recent years. In 2014, he did a campaign ad for the Senate candidacy of Jack Kingston. He endorsed Brian Kemp for Governor in 2018. Walker, who appeared on the Trump-hosted show The Apprentice, endorsed Trump in the 2016 presidential election and spoke at the Republican National Convention in 2020.

Only a couple of days ago, Walker made news during an appearance at a House Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties on legislation, H.R. 40, to study reparations. Ultimately, this may be why Towery is mentioning Walker as a potential candidate. Walker told the subcommittee that he opposes reparations. His written testimony is available here.

The story notes that Walker doesn’t currently live in Georgia. Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution, however, states, “No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen.” So, Walker would simply need to reside in Georgia by the time he is elected.
