How You Can Invest in Our Future (Not Money)

by ScotPosted onJuly 2, 2024July 2, 2024

For about the last nine months or so I have been participating in the Atlanta Civic Collaboratory, which has put me in the orbit of some extraordinary people. One of those people is Claire Haley who serves as the Vice President of Special Projects at the Atlanta History Center. And Claire has been busy developing a program I believe Peach Pundit readers have something to contribute to.

Youth250 is a project that seeks to make a very big deal out of the United States 250th birthday. And while doing that they are looking at ways to get 18-30 year olds to engage in our civic institutions. This is an opportunity for you to help shape what that looks like.

If you are in the Gold Dome lobbyist corps, a staffer, or even an elected official, this is something you should seriously consider doing.

Calling Institutional Leaders + Gen Z Individuals:

Participate in Youth250 Planning Workshop in Metro Atlanta, GA

You’re invited to apply to participate in one of four Youth250 workshops happening nationwide, to inform the Gen Z-driven strategy for how American institutions commemorate and observe the 250th anniversary of the United States. Please feel free to share this invitation with others who you think would benefit from this opportunity!

Workshop date: Monday, August 5, 2024, 9am – 5pm

Workshop Location: Atlanta History Center in Atlanta, GA

Deadline to apply: July 10, 2024 at midnight

Who can apply:

  • Gen Z individuals local to Metro Atlanta, ages 18-30*
  • Institutional leaders, senior-level staff and decision-makers in history, civics, government or similar

What we’ll do together:

With the nation’s museums and cultural institutions set to host festivals, parades, events and exhibitions as we commemorate 250 years since our founding, we need help from younger people to shape everything from the vibe to the swag to the proverbial playlists. This workshop is a rare opportunity to bring together decision-makers with taste-makers on equal footing in the civic space, uniquely hosted by regional historic sites, to dream, scheme and have some fun imagining the future and incubating some ideas. This will be a facilitated experience, allowing time to connect and share experiences and perspectives of the country today and to co-create new foundations for how we celebrate and reckon with our promises and practices. It will be an interactive and participatory experience, and a chance to meet others in your area who want to channel hope and vision into setting up our country for the next 250 years. Come make your voice heard (voting isn’t the only way!), learn some new tools and tricks from the cutting edge of human-centered design, and leave your fingerprints on the youth expression of this major milestone in our history.

How to apply: Complete this form by July 10

About Youth250

Made By Us connects young adults with the power of history to make a better future. With our coalition of hundreds of museums and historic sites nationwide, and programs that serve Millennials and Gen Z, we’re working to bridge past, present and future. Youth250 is the nationwide, youth-focused effort to bring Gen Z input and perspectives to how we mark the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026, supported by the Institute for Museum and Library Services. As a member of the Steering Committee of Made By Us and a partner in the Youth250 effort in Atlanta, Atlanta History Center is excited to work with individuals and organizations across Atlanta to make Youth250 a signature city-wide effort.

*Gen Z participants will receive a $200 stipend for participating in the day-long workshop.
