Gwinnett Superintendent News: Legislators Strike Back.

CORRECTION: Rep. David Clark did not introduce the proposed legislation referenced below. The bill was introduced by Rep. Dewey McClain of District 109. The legislation is now online, HB 767. I apologize for the error.

A group of Gwinnett Legislators have introduced a new bill that creates consequences for the Gwinnett Board of Education. Rep. Scott Hilton signed on to the Legislation and posted this on Facebook:

🚨BREAKING 🚨

Just signed legislation to reduce Gwinnett Co. School Board pay to $50 when a Superintendent is fired and paid a massive buy-out. The bill also protects freedom of speech and re-affirms that Board Members can freely speak with the press and their constituents.

This bi-partisan legislation sends a strong message to our School Board to get their house back in order.

Gwinnett’s Board of Education has fired two Superintendents in the past four years, paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in buyouts.

The bill, crafted by Rep. David Clark, does not have a bill number yet but appears to be local legislation, which is not subject to the Crossover Day deadline. Thus, it could be passed into law this Session if it has majority support of Gwinnett’s House and Senate delegations.
