Georgia’s Weather Truthers Are an Embarrassment to Us All

It is time for a serious conversation about the circus act that some people are trying to pass off as leadership in Georgia. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kandiss Taylor are out here making fools of themselves and dragging the rest of us along for the ride.

The storm that devastated Texas was no ordinary weather event. It was a brutal, relentless system that dumped staggering amounts of rain in a short period of time. The Guadalupe River rose more than 26 feet in less than an hour. Entire areas were swallowed by floodwaters with terrifying speed. By the time the waters receded, more than 80 people had been killed, including dozens of children and camp counselors at Camp Mystic. This was not some freak, unexplainable occurrence. It was the kind of deadly flood that meteorologists had been warning about. The National Weather Service issued alerts well in advance; flood watches went out more than 12 hours before the disaster, and flash flood warnings were issued three hours before the river even began to climb. These were natural conditions, tracked by real experts using modern science and technology, with warnings issued to help save lives.

Before I get into it, I want to take a moment to recognize Congressman Buddy Carter and his family. The tragedy in Texas hit very close to home for them. His granddaughters were at that summer camp, and while they survived, their cousin Janie was among those who lost their lives. That family is grieving, along with so many others, and they deserve our prayers and full support during this devastating time.

Unfortunately, not everyone has shown even a shred of decency or basic human empathy.

Kandiss Taylor, who is running to replace Congressman Carter, responded to this heartbreaking flood not with compassion, but with full-blown conspiracy theories. She claimed the flood was not a tragic act of nature. She insisted it was “fake weather,” cooked up through cloud seeding and geoengineering. She posted to X ranting “Fake! Fake! Fake!” and called it “murder,” all while families were still awaiting news of their missing loved ones.

This isn’t just some fringe internet rant. This kind of garbage has a long, ugly history. The conspiracy theories Kandiss Taylor is pushing are just recycled versions of some of the oldest antisemitic lies in the book; the ones that claim Jewish people secretly control the weather and use disasters to manipulate world events. That’s the same tired, disgusting narrative that’s been around for centuries. It used to involve blaming Jews for droughts and plagues. Now it gets repackaged as cloud seeding and “geoengineering.”

And let’s not forget that Kandiss Taylor proudly calls Stew Peters, an openly antisemitic, unhinged conspiracy theorist, her “best friend.” This is the same guy who pushes every vile, hateful theory imaginable and has called for violence against his political enemies. Kandiss doesn’t just tolerate him. She amplifies him. And it is increasingly clear just how much influence Peters has over Taylor as she enthusiastically repeats his hateful lies.

But this is not just a Kandiss Taylor problem. Marjorie Taylor Greene has been swimming in these same filthy waters for years. Her now-infamous post about wildfires being caused by Rothschild-connected satellites earned her the “Jewish space lasers” nickname for good reason. That wasn’t a slip-up. Greene has repeatedly trafficked in conspiracy theories that follow the same antisemitic playbook; blaming Jewish people for manipulating disasters, financial systems, and world events from behind the curtain.

On top of that, Greene has repeatedly refused to support Israel and has cozied up to others who peddle this garbage. She doesn’t just spread conspiracies. She has actively aligned herself with a movement that has deep, rotten roots in antisemitism.

So here we are. One sitting member of Congress and one aspiring candidate, both out here pushing nonsense about fake weather, both amplifying antisemitic rhetoric, and both humiliating Georgia every time they open their mouths.

This isn’t just embarrassing. It is dangerous.

Someone with some courage and credibility needs to step up and challenge Marjorie Taylor Greene in the next primary if she decides to run again. She has shown everyone exactly who she is. If no one stands up to her, then we will get what we deserve.

And to anyone working on either of these campaigns, especially the young people who might think this is their ticket into politics, do not just walk away. Run. Run as fast as you can. Your name and your future are too important to throw away for either of these nitwits. Politics is a long game and you still have time to build a solid resume without this type of baggage. You do not need to hitch your career to their circus act.

Georgia deserves better than this. And the whole country is watching.
