New Senate Leadership

A hearty Peach Pundit Congrats (and also our condolences) to State Senators, Larry Walker and Jason Anavitarte, for their elevation in Senate Leadership.

Walker, who represents the 20th Senate District in Middle Georgia, had been serving as the Majority Caucus Secretary. He won his seat during a special election in 2015. He is widely considered to be likable and calm by his colleagues and the friends in the hall. He will now move on to a vote of the whole Senate when they reconvene next, likely in January.

Senator Ananvitarte represents the 31st District in Polk and Paulding Counties and had been serving as the Majority Caucus Chair. Prior to being elected to the Senate in 2020 he served as a member of the Paulding County School Board and city council and Mayor Pro Tem in Doraville before that. Since his role is in caucus leadership, he moves into the job immediately.

This also means that there are two new leadership vacancies in the Senate majority caucus. One member tells me there will be a future caucus election to fill the now vacant roles of Chair and Secretary.

The coming year will see a whole host of challenges for both of these men as they navigate a Senate that sees several of its members running against each other for higher office. While this will present opportunities for showmanship and even shenanigans, how they bring the caucus together to continue to pass solid, conservative legislation will be vital to all of us.

Please join me in wishing them luck and much success.
